Landmarks of the Heart

When I look out across the bay
toward the western horizon,
I see only fair weather wisps
of clouds float lazily across
the placid pale blue sky.

The city skyline is invisible.
There is no point of reference.

Pangs of fear, anger,
sorrow and rage return,
the sense of remorse
and helplessness I felt
as I watched black smoke rise
and the Towers fall.

Hidden in the haze of the horizon,
no buildings stand out
and an infinite emptiness
plagues my soul.

But, once a year the void
in the evening sky is filled
with two lights that shine
to heaven
