All help from him hath fled
Who with adulterous tread
Defiles another's bed.
Though many streams should pour
Their water o'er and o'er,
Those waters evermore
Are poured in vain;
They cannot cleanse the guilt
Of blood that once is spilt,
Man's hand to stain.
