The great trees, rifted
With sunlight, lifted
Their sturdy boughs to the upper air;
Each vista seeming
Like happy dreaming
Of vales in Paradise most fair.

The birds were calling,
And nuts were falling
From squirrels who sprang from limb to limb,
While over the bridges
And moss-green ridges
We walked together till twilight dim.

No word was spoken
That could betoken
The inner thought of us two that day.
To meet and sever!
Ah! shall we ever
Walk again in that dear old way?
