Intervention (for Russ)

When did the urge begin?
While you were in school?
Was it something you heard or read?
Maybe a song on the radio?
Did you do it to impress the girls?
Was it peer pressure?
Or did you do it to be cool?
Yeah, yeah I know you have it under control?
It’s only recreational, strictly casual.
What bullshit!!
You were a home-body with a stash on your bookshelf, maybe
something mixed in your papers and hidden on your computer.
But you needed something more.
So you’d go out to the local dives once or twice a week to catch
a buzz but that wasn’t enough.
You’d chase that high all the way to Manhattan driving your car
from eastern Long Island, you’d go down to the Village and check
out all the hot spots; St. Marks, West 4th, Cornelia St., The Bowery,
Smalls, and probably a few more places.
You became a regular customer in need of a fix.
You’d park your car anywhere, have it ticketed and towed a couple
times and you just didn’t care.
You began to binge; racing from Sound Beach to Oceanside
to Huntington, all in one night.
What pushed you to this point? 
You started in library basements and now you’re hanging
out in tattoo parlors and old barns.
Word has it you've joined the notorious North Shore Posse.
Listening and reading just doesn’t satisfy you.
Your Jones has got you writing and reciting.
Face it you’ve got a full blown addiction.
You are a Poetry Junkie.
