Joy Division foi uma banda pós-punk formada no ano de 1976, em Manchester, Inglaterra. A banda acabou em 18 de Maio de 1980 após o suicídio do vocalista e guitarrista, Ian Curtis. Após o termino da banda, os três integrantes remanescentes formaram o New Order.
Com uma forte influência na cultura punk de 1977 misturado com conceitos artísticos, Joy Divison foi uma banda que misturava o rock underground com algumas nuances de experimentalismo e inovações eletrônicas, inspirado por bandas como o Kraftwerk.
Seu som tinha influências de The Doors, Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Sex Pistols e Iggy Pop. Era caracterizado por densas melodias, bastante marcadas pela bateria quase "militar" de Stephen Morris, e uma tendência para a depressão e a claustrofobia. As letras obscuras e extremamente poéticas de Ian Curtis se tornaram uma característica marcante do grupo, assim como seu vocal em barítono.
