Quando você ouvir o trem
rangendo as rodas nos trilhos,
é o caipira que vem
trazendo mulher e filhos.

Este trem desbravador
vai rasgando meu sertão.
Leva alegria, leva dor
e um tanto de emoção.
O retirante da roça
sem meio de subsistência,
abandona sua palhoça,
e em meio de dor imensa
vai levando sua tralha
e onde houver uma colheita,
em um canto se agasalha
e fica na espera, na espreita.
E vai com sua família
sem destino ou paradeiro.
Pra sobreviver se humilha
por um nada de dinheiro.
Ele precisa de alimento
e seus filhinhos também.
O que fazer neste momento
se não tem nem um vintém?
Qualquer trabalho ele aceita:
já tem os calos na mão.
À noite num canto se ajeita
e aquece o seu coração.
