Enquanto outros combatem

Empunhasse eu a espada dos valentes!
Impelisse-me a acção, embriagado,
Por esses campos onde a Morte e o Fado
Dão a lei aos reis tremulos e ás gentes!

Respirariam meus pulmões contentes
O ar de fogo do circo ensanguentado...
Ou cahira radioso, amortalhado
Na fulva luz dos gladios reluzentes!

Já não veria dissipar-se a aurora
De meus inuteis annos, sem uma hora
Viver mais que de sonhos e anciedade!

Já não veria em minhas mãos piedosas
Desfolhar-se, uma a uma, as tristes rosas
D'esta palida e esteril mocidade!
