Homem! Homem! mendigo do Infinito!
Abres a bocca e estendes os teus braços
A vêr se os astros cáem dos espaços
A encher o vacuo immenso do finito!

Porque sóbes á rocha de granito?
Porque é que dás no ár tantos abraços?
E cuidas amarrar com ferreos laços
Um reflexo da sombra de um esp'rito?

Vê que o céo, por escarneo, a luz nos lança!
Que, á tua voz, a voz da immensidão
Responde com immensa gargalhada!

A idéa fechou a porta á esp'rança,
Quando lhe foi pedir gazalho e pão...
Deixou-a cara a cara com o Nada!!...
