Mattie Ross é uma jovem de 14 anos cujo pai foi morto a sangue frio

pelo cobarde Tom Chaney e que está determinada a levá-lo à justiça.

Com a ajuda de um conflituoso e alcoólico U.S. Marshal, Rooster Cogburn, ela prepara-se,

ignorando as reservas do próprio Rooster, para caçar Chaney.

O sangue do seu pai exige que persiga o criminoso até território Índio e o encontre antes que um Texas Ranger,

chamado LaBoeuf, o apanhe e leve de volta para o Texas, para ser julgado pela morte de outro homem.
